Blood Tests

When our pets are sick, we rely on their behaviour to tell us something is wrong. Unfortunately, oftentimes our pets don’t act differently, or we miss small changes and illness becomes quite advanced before we see the signs. Regular visits to your veterinarian and blood testing, allow us to detect problems early and treat as soon as possible.

Why is it important to perform blood tests for dogs?

Remember, it’s in your pet’s nature to hide illness. In the wild, sick animals don’t survive. Most animals won’t show they’re sick until it is advanced enough that they can’t hide it anymore. Blood work will catch problems early and maximize chances of success. These tests will tell us exactly what is going on and allows us to make immediate decisions to help your pet. It also helps us determine medications and therapies to maximize your pet’s chances of recovery.

How do I interpret my dog’s blood test results?

Well, to be honest, that’s what we are for. Our veterinarians will look at the test results and interpret them for you. You are more than welcome to ask any questions you may have. Our job is to ensure you understand any issues we find so that we can come up with a plan together, that will best help your pet.

What you might not realize is that there are some very key differences between the food you buy at your veterinarians vs the foods you buy at the grocery or pet stores. We don’t sell theirs, and they CAN’T  sell ours for some key reasons. Veterinary food is formulated to treat a specific condition; think of it as medicine. Typically, a veterinarian would need to prescribe this nutrition for the treatment of a specific disease or condition. Hence the brand “Prescription Diet”. Store-bought brands are for wellness and prevention, NOT treatment - this is a very important distinction!
